Jumper - Jump away! (But read the books)

I recently watched the movie Jumper. The movie was terrible, but it turned out that the books are great.
Jumper and Reflex are books by Steven Gould. They tell the story of how Davy discovers his ability to teleport, and how that affects him, his loved ones and his society.
Unfortunately the movie was only loosely [...]

Go - An Ancient and Venerable Game

Many people think of chess as the ultimate strategy game. I have to disagree.
I believe that Go is the ultimate strategy game. It has simpler rules, more elegant strategy, and is more than a thousand years older than chess. It is also played by more people worldwide than Western chess.
The rules are simple. Go [...]

UPCON 2008

UPCON is the yearly gaming convention organised by the University of Pretoria Krygspel group. This year it will take place in Pretoria on the weekend of 5-6 April. Expect wargaming, cardgaming, lan gaming, boardgaming, roleplaying, anime, and gothic hotties galore. I hope.

Bloggerati Joburg

What a blast. An unknown (possibly unknowable) number of assorted bloggers, journos, techies and new media types showed up. No higher networking purpose, just Vincent Maher and Matt Buckland looking for an excuse to throw a party. And what a party it was.
Chairs were in short supply, possibly a deliberate strategy to facilitate mingling. Their [...]

Japanese Film Festival

It’s once again time for the Japanese Film Festival, hosted by Cinema Nouveau.
This year they are screening Tokyo Story, Fancy Dance, Glass Rabbit, Hotel Hibiscus, Taro the Dragon Boy and Twilight Samurai.
The films will be showing at the Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria from 14 March to16 March and at Johannesburg’s Rosebank Mall from 21 March [...]

Animax in South Africa

Both Larch and Shadowfox have posted criticisms of Animax, and I have to agree.
I can’t imagine what MultiChoice is thinking. Their stated target market is defined as “viewers aged 15 to 29″. That means that the majority of the viewers are young adults. So why is Animax only available in the expensive full subscription?
This basic [...]

.hack//Roots: Longest Game Intro Ever

For those not familiar with it, Project .hack and it’s sequel .hack Conglomerate, are “multimedia projects” created in Japan. Each project tells a story from multiple perspectives using anime, manga, games and even collectable cards.
Having greatly enjoyed .hack//Sign, I thought that the sequel .hack//Roots might be interesting as well.
It started out well. The online game [...]

SA ComicCon 2007

I never read comics as a kid. I was too caught up in reading actual books. Now that I’m older, I can’t help but noticing all the comic book stands at anime and game conventions
As usual, I only got interested in things that are unconventional, unknown, unobtainable, and out of print anyway. (Xombi, anyone?)
After hanging [...]

ICON 2007

I look forward to this convention every year. Apart from the usual roleplaying, card gaming, comics and anime screenings, this year the Medieval Armed Combat Society is giving a demonstration of medieval combat.
ICON 2007 will take place from 13 to 15 July at the Jabula Community Centre in Sandringham. Check Roleplaying South Africa for [...]
