No More RPL for ICDL

ICDL

One of the required subjects for a computer science degree at UNISA is CEM101, which is apparently equivalent to the ICDL.

I already know how to sling a keyboard, so I did the CEM101 module through recognition of prior learning (RPL). The handling fee for the RPL process was R 145.00 (payable once only), and the exam fee was R 370.00 for a total of R515.00. The estimated study fees for doing the module the normal way is around R 1725.00, and it also sounds like you also need license fees for XP and whichever version of Office is in fashion at the time.

I did the test yesterday, and it certainly wasn’t rocket science (or computer science, which is much more interesting). It was basic stuff like “copy this file” and “change the font on this text”. I finished in about half the allotted time, and got 100% for 6 of the 8 sections. Anybody who’s held down a job in IT before would ace this test.

So what’s my gripe? I’m the last guy who’s been allowed to do CEM101 through RPL. Ever. After me, every other IT guy and code monkey will be forced to Go Directly To CEM101 Jail, Do Not Pass Go, Oh And Pay A R1725.00+ Fine While You’re At It.

Kinda defeats the purpose of Open Distance Learning (ODL) doesn’t it?
