What is Free Comic Book Day? Just what it says: Once a year, on the first Saturday of May, you can visit your local friendly comic book specialty shop, and you will be given at least one free comic book. The main aim seems to be to get feet into the stores.
Personally I’d just make the first volume of a comic book series freely downloadable online. Free downloads boost paper sales. Ask Baen Books, the MIT Press, the National Academies Press, Cory Doctorow, Charles Stross, Lawrence Lessig, and the guys who wrote the Cluetrain Manifesto. I’m sure there are others. (If you hear of other authors or publishers putting books online for free in order to boost sales, kindly let me know.)
This year is the seventh international Free Comic Book Day, and it’s falls on 3 May.

Neil Gaiman with Harlequin (I think) put one of his books up for download this year.
Yes! That’s the one that was on the tip of my tongue. Linky
