Starter for 10 (Movie)

Ster Kinekor invited Mensa to an exclusive screening of Starter for 10. I attended the screening, and I finally met Owen Swart there! (You really, really need to see his Homeopathic Suicide Attempt)

Based on the David Nicholls novel Starter for Ten, the movie tells the story of Brian Jackson - a working-class British kid who equates knowing everything with being clever.

The movie starts off with Brian saying: “Ever since I can remember, I’ve wanted to be clever. Some people are born clever, same way some people are born beautiful. I’m not one of those people. I had to work at it.” Somehow this assumed modesty legitimizes Brian’s obvious intelligence. He decides to enter University, and soon after becoming the star of the quiz team, manages to make a fool of himself repeatedly in interesting and uniquely colorful ways.

On balance, it the movie turned out to be a very British, but surprisingly good, romantic comedy. It got good ratings on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes and the author wrote an an interesting article about the movie.

It’s just a pity that the movie didn’t have any beards.
