A Steampunk Ghost

Charles Babbage, widely regarded as the father of computing, was a typical hacker.
He never completed the first Difference Engine, instead designing a more advanced Difference Engine, and later he produced several incomplete designs for a yet more advanced Analytic Engine.
None of his computing machines were built within his lifetime. But now, more than 150 [...]

Free Comic Book Day 2008

What is Free Comic Book Day? Just what it says: Once a year, on the first Saturday of May, you can visit your local friendly comic book specialty shop, and you will be given at least one free comic book. The main aim seems to be to get feet into the stores.
Personally I’d just make [...]

Live Action Ghost in the Shell

Larch has just drawn my attention to the fact that Spielberg got his paws on the rights make a Ghost in the Shell live action movie.
I can’t think of a worse director for this than Spielberg. Look at what he did to AI and Memoirs of a Geisha! The man can’t stand an unhappy ending. [...]

ICON 2008 - Space Ninjas and Zombie Pirates

I finally managed to track down those ICON posters that were up at UPCON. It wasn’t easy, but we have a Constant Flux exclusive here: These aren’t even up on the ICON homepage yet! For those who don’t know, ICON is just about the biggest roleplaying, card gaming, wargaming, comic and anime convention in the [...]

A Karoo Moose

I have the pleasure of being a good friend of Wilhelm Conradie. He’s a playwright, stage manager and drama lecturer living in the Cape. He has been stage manager for plays like Victory, has helped out with Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf, written plays like iforest (he says that not even the poster got it [...]

Starter for 10 (Movie)

Ster Kinekor invited Mensa to an exclusive screening of Starter for 10. I attended the screening, and I finally met Owen Swart there! (You really, really need to see his Homeopathic Suicide Attempt)
Based on the David Nicholls novel Starter for Ten, the movie tells the story of Brian Jackson - a working-class British kid who [...]

UPCON 2008 Feedback

I attended UPCON 2008, and it was fantastic. MPD (Mage Pen Dragon) expressly forbid me to watch Anime, and dragged me around meeting people until I was brave enough to start wandering around on my own. She eventually won second place in the best roleplayer category. Very cool.
Spotted Larch outside on the grass selling his [...]

UPCON, Hacker Diet and Star Trek Minicon

Just a reminder - UPCON 2008 starts tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to mingling, seeing new Anime (hosted kindly by Otakumag), and finding out about this Legend of the Five Rings game I’ve been hearing about. (Yes, I’m a convicted Japanese Fanboy. So sue me.)
If you are attending, you might not recognize me. I’ve lost [...]
